Tracey: I actually saw you back in August in Wisconsin.
Bryan: I’m sorry?
Tracey: My mom and I actually saw you back in August in Wisconsin.
Bryan: Oh you did, at Hayward?
Tracey: Yeah at Hayward.
Bryan: Oh you were at that show, awesome!
Tracey: Yep, and I actually called Kay to hear part of it too.
Bryan: Aw man, that was a great, that was a show, that was a great show. I had a great time.
Tracey: Yep. I made you a poster about your kids.
Bryan: You gave me what?
Tracey: A poster about your kids. Well I made it for you, and you were like “Oh I want to keep this”.
Bryan: Oh yeah, yeah. Sorry the clarity is a little bad. It might be the speakerphone. I feel like I’m really digging into the phone to hear you, so I’m trying.
Tracey: It’s cool. It was like this big, blue poster that had all of your accomplishments on it, and you were like “this is so cool”.
Bryan: Oh! Definitely, I remember that.
Tracey: Did you show it to them?
Bryan: Absolutely. Absolutely.
Tracey: Were they like aww?
Bryan: Definitely. Totally.
Tracey: Oh yeah, and then you held up the autograph line for like ten minutes, talking about these old posters.
Bryan: *laughs* Yeah.
Tracey: And telling all these stories “this was taken then” and “I didn’t want to wear this shirt”.
Bryan: *laughs*
Tracey: That one white picture, where you’re in all white.
Bryan: Oh yes, I remember that. That was an interesting story. I think I may have told it that night.
Tracey: Yep, you did.
Bryan: In the beginning of my career I was sort of just starting out, afraid to say no, and that was one of those days, where I wish I would have just said “You know what, I’m not going to wear that. You’re going to have to find something else, because I’m not taking a picture in this.” Even though it’s come back to haunt me, that’s just one of those things where you’ve gotta look at it and you’ve gotta laugh. It’s more funny then anything.
Tracey: So Kay when you see him, you’re supposed to bring like a really old picture.
Bryan: Yeah, yeah. The old pictures are definitely great for comic relief.
Tracey: I just remember that one, and then like the puppy dog one’s.
Bryan: Oh yeah. Oh yeah.
Tracey: Things started out pretty fast and crazy for you in the 90’s. If you could go back and change anything about that time, would you? If so, what would it be? (Kay)
Bryan: If I could go back and change anything about that time. Obviously, the first thing, I wish I knew then, what I know now. *laughs* But that’s completely impossible. That’s not the way life works. You have to learn your lessons through trial and error, you know. But let me think. I may have done some things a little differently if I could, in the area of taking a little more time, you know to see family. I think during that first sort of rush of all the success, I really felt like I got caught up in it. Again, I was the type of guy, that at that time, I really let a lot of people’s suggestions and vibes influence me, sometimes for the good, but sometimes not so much for the good. I wish I’d of said no a lot more in those days, because I felt like I lost a period of time with my family, you know. I wasn’t married, I didn’t have kids at the time, but you know family. I mean, just my grandparents, my mom, dad, and everybody in Oklahoma. I felt like I really missed them for 3-4 years. I felt like I didn’t even get to see them all the time. You know, you spend your whole life with them, and all of a sudden you’re on a tube with wheels, rolling all over the United States. You don’t know where you’re at from one night, to the next. There weren’t cell phones in the beginning there, so it was tough. I wish I’d made more time to just kind of take a break, and go see them more often.
Tracey: You meet excited fans all the time. Step into their shoes a minute & tell us who you'd be excited to meet.
Bryan: I might have to get you to repeat that, I’m sorry Tracey.
Tracey: No problem. You meet excited fans all the time. Step into their shoes a minute & tell us who you'd be excited to meet.
Bryan: Who would I be excited to meet?
Tracey: Yep.
Bryan: Wow, that’s a long list. Lets see, first person would probably be, well first of all that’s the one thing about my career I feel so incredibly blessed. I’ve gotten to work with so many people, whom I never thought I would have ever scratched the surface of. I mean, I’ve gotten to work with so many different people, that were huge influences on me, and on my music. But, maybe people that I haven’t, one would be Bonnie Raitt. I just think she’s an incredible artist, a great singer, and a great guitar player, great songwriter. I think that would be really, really cool to meet her, and somewhere down the line, collaborate with her, or work with her on something. Goodness, man I’d love to meet the president one day. I think that would be very cool. I thought that was going to work out. One time, we had a schedule, we were scheduled to go and perform at an event, at the White House. And we had it actually set up, and there was a meeting that was called, so it was cancelled, and hasn’t been rescheduled, so that was kind of a bummer, but you know that. Goodness, there’s so many people. Gosh. Those are the first two people that come to mind, but if I think of more along the way I’ll let you know.
Tracey: Sounds good. Do you remember any of the fans you met from your tour days, for example when you toured with Vince Gill? (Tiffany)
Bryan: Oh, absolutely. You’d be very surprised, well maybe not surprised, but a lot of those fans are still coming to the shows. And are just as energetic and as excited today, as they were then. I mean gosh, there’s just so many. It’s hard, I wouldn’t want to leave anyone out, but there’s so many people. I remember, I’ve always been a lot better with faces then I am names, but there’s a ton of people that I remember, that I still constantly see.
Tracey: Really, do you want to give any shoutouts in case they are listening?
Bryan: Goodness, a shout out to Carol, a shout out to Christy and Courtney Martin. Goodness sakes, I’m trying to think of all the other names. Lets see, Taylor, man, Lisa, Lindsay. That’s about all I can think of right now. But, again, if I think of more along the way I’ll shout em out.
Kay: What is the most embarrassing thing that has ever happened to you onstage?
Bryan: The most embarrassing thing that has ever happened to me onstage? Okay, are you ready?
Tracey & Kay: Yeah.
Bryan: Can’t believe I’m telling you all this, but I’ll tell you guys.
Tracey: Okay.
Bryan: I was playing at a fair, and I believe it was in Paris, Tennesse. And it had a big long catwalk, you know, out in front of the stage. It was one of those fair shows, so we had to do two shows that day. We had a song, where it was kind of a free for all jam kind of thing, where all the guys in the band would take turns playing solos. And it was really a neat tune, it was called “Bad Day To Let You Go”. We did this thing at the end of the song, where we’d, it was really dramatic, everybody would come out front together, and we’d all sort of line up, and start flailing guitars, back and forth. It was really neat. I think, that particular night, I happened to be walking backwards on the catwalk. Now, why I was walking backwards, I don’t know. I guess I was trying to be extra cool. They were walking towards me, and I was walking backwards. So it was kind of like a, I don’t know, they were just kind of, we were just having fun. Before I knew it, I had run out of room, sort of speak, so I actually took a step off the catwalk, and I literally fell off the stage. It was probably, about 5 feet off the ground, so I was about to fall 5 feet, when this huge security guard, you know, out front in front of the stage, they actually caught me as I was falling. And it was like you see in those rock videos, like I just fell, but bounced right back up. It was almost like you couldn’t really even tell that I fell. But, the other guys in the band were laughing so hard, they almost couldn’t play. I was so embarrassed. When I walked offstage I was like so mortified. But the next show, this is what’s so funny about the next show. We came out, and I’m still in the back of my mind going “I just fell off the stage, how embarrassing is that?” And the sound crew had put, like yellow police tape, like gas tape in like, 5 feet increments on the catwalk. The first one said 20 feet, the next one said 15 feet, the next one said 10, and when it got to like ten feet, it said “you need to start slowing down”, and then the next one said “stop don’t go any farther”. It was just so funny. But anyway, it was just hilarious. I mean, it was just hilarious so.
Tracey: Good thing nobody video taped it.
Bryan: Yeah, hopefully nobody did.
Tracey: And it comes back to haunt you one day.
Bryan: That would be some serious blackmail.
Kay: It would be worse then those photos of you dressed in white wouldn’t it?
Bryan: Yeah really.
